Deaf Pc puts rest in shade
A partially deaf Northamptonshire Police officer, whose outstanding arrest figures led his force to describe him as putting his peers "in the shade", has been nominated for a national award.
Pc Mark Holland, aged 29, arrested an "amazing" 88 people, submitted 188 intelligence logs and was named the best performing officer in his incident resolution team in March.
The former Environmental Health worker has now been shortlisted as Student Officer of the Year by Jane's Police Review, in recognition of his service to the county force.
Pc Holland, who lives in Northampton and is based at Campbell Square, said it was an honour to be nominated, and added: "When you see other people who get nominated for these awards over the years, you realise it's special and I'm very proud.
"I'm not a good self-publicist, but I would like to think I was nominated for my dedication to the job. I'm very committed to Northamptonshire Police.
"Each police officer has different strengths and abilities and statistics are just one way of showing them, but I'm flattered that the force has nominated me."
In less than nine months, Pc Holland carried out 122 sanction detections, attended 801 incidents and completed 84 stop and searches.
His supervisor Sgt Alasdair Fraser said: "Pc Holland is a team worker and has excellent self-motivation combined with good communication skills." A force spokesman told Jane's Police Review his figures were unequalled and put other officers "in the shade".
Pc Holland had to overcome partial deafness in one ear to qualify for the police force, and had to be fitted with a specialist hearing aid and undergo medical testing before qualifying as an officer.
But he said: "I inquired about a job with a larger force before I looked at Northamptonshire, and the attitudes could not have been more different. Northamptonshire Police did everything it could to accommodate me, and looked more at what I could offer than what I would have to overcome.
"Anyone with a disability who is put off applying for a job with the police should look into it because you might be surprised at what can be done."
