Cricket star Michael Vaughan helps out kids
Former England cricket captain Michael Vaughan visited Northampton to teach youngsters basic batting, bowling and fielding techniques.
The 2005 Ashes winner was at Caroline Chisholm School yesterday to visit one of his cricket coaching camps for five to 10-year-olds.
The one-week course offers a "progressive" introduction to cricket using fun and adaptable games that encourage players to learn new skills through self-discovery.
Mr Vaughan said: "It's a very good group of kids who are really enthusiastic. Hopefully we can pass on that enthusiasm so that in a few years time they will join up with club and county teams.
"We try to get the kids interested in being part of a team and show them the fun side of cricket such as whacking the ball and learning how to spin it.
"I think the grass roots of the game are a lot better than a lot of people think," Mr Vaughan added.
"I think there are lots of good role models in the national side and Twenty20 cricket is getting kids interested in the game.
"There is a lot of competition with other sports so we just want these young kids to go out and have fun."
Encouragingly for English cricket fans, Mr Vaughan said he thought the national team had a "great chance" of winning the Ashes in Australia this winter.
He said: "Over the past eight years we've had a lot of success and won two Ashes series.
"I think they have a great chance in Australia and would be disappointed if they didn't get something out of the series."
The Michael Vaughan Cricket Camp takes place at 20 venues throughout the UK and is delivered by experienced cricket coaches.
The week-long course is themed around the world's greatest cricketing nations and the coaching and games for each day reflect the culture, techniques and cricketing legends of the nation represented that day.
"In the field" and "at the crease" coaching sessions each day develop the players by drawing on different cricket skills and techniques, which they can put into practice on the final day's Cricket Festival.
