Craig eager to do his bit for charity

A disabled teenager will take part in the Northampton Sport Relief Mile this weekend, six years after an accident which nearly claimed his life.

Craig Colton will take part in the fund-raising race, which starts from the Market Square in the town centre on Sunday morning, along with his father Andrew and two care workers from Christchurch Court, the care centre where he now lives.

The 19-year-old Cobblers fan suffered a serious head injury and was left fighting for his life in hospital in November 2004 after an accident at his home in Quinton when he was aged 14.

Speaking to the Chronicle & Echo about his son's decision to enter the Sport Relief Mile, Mr Colton, of Spinney Hill, Northampton, said: "He wants to participate and do his bit.

"Since the incident in November 2004 when he suffered a very serious head injury, Craig has battled back through his own determination, inner strength and resilience.

"He's the sort of person who, despite his disabilities, will look out for other people, not just himself. He wanted to try to do whatever he could and give something back."

Craig suffered something similar to a stroke after the accident and now has paralysis on his right hand side and struggles to walk.

Mr Colton said: "I'm really proud of him and I want to say thank-you to the staff at Christchurch Court for helping out. I don't know how he'll find it but Craig is definitely up for the challenge and will give it his best shot. He understands what it's for and the reasons why it's taking place and he wants to help."

Meanwhile staff at an opticians in Northampton town centre are preparing to do their bit for Sport Relief by holding a bike-a-thon this weekend.

Staff at Specsavers in Abington Street will cycle a total of 174 miles in store from 10am until 5pm on Saturday, an equivalent distance of riding from Northampton to Aberystwyth, in Wales.
