County Hall launches new online petitions

Northamptonshire County Council will this week launch a page on its website offering people a chance to create and submit petitions online, which can then be submitted directly to the authority.

The launch comes ahead of the Government deadline, of December 2010, for councils to implement this service.

The feature is available on the 10 Downing Street website, which allows petitions to be submitted to the Prime Minister or to the relevant Government department if it has 500 signatures or more.

The petitions for County Hall have no lower limit, so all will be submitted to full council. However, it will only be debated if 2.5 per cent of the total resident population sign it.

Although residents can still take up traditional paper petitions, this allows them to be visible to a much wider audience.

They are also copied to a relevant cabinet member and divisional councillor.
