A free weekend parking scheme is being launched in Northampton’s multi-storey car parks this week as part of a borough council scheme to encourage visitors to stay and shop longer in the town.
Car users will now be able to park free-of-charge on Saturdays and Sundays and for up to two hours free every week day at St John’s, St Michael’s, Grosvenor Centre and Mayorhold car parks.
Parking will remain free on Sundays and bank holidays in all Northampton Borough Council car parks.
Leader of the borough council Councillor David Mackintosh (Con, Castle), said: “Residents and businesses have told us time and again that they wanted to see more free parking and a simpler offer.
“After the successful trial we ran last August, we have listened and are now making this significant investment in free parking at our pay-on-foot car parks.
“And we hope that this free parking initiative will also encourage new visitors to come to the town, and regular visitors to spend more time in Northampton, enjoying the great shops, cafés, restaurants and tourist attractions located in and around the town’s Cultural Quarter.”
The initiative was agreed in the council’s latest budget proposals after successful summer and Christmas free parking trials.
