Cosworth waiting for deal news
Formula 1 engineering firm Cosworth has said it is too early to say how the withdrawal of one of the sport's newest racing teams will affect the Northampton company.
Formula 1's governing body, the FIA, this week announced American-racing team USF1 would not take part in the 2010 season.
St James-based Cosworth had signed a deal to supply the company's engines in June last year.
A Cosworth spokesman yesterday said it was hard to say what impact the decision would have on the firm, but confirmed it would continue to work with USF1 if they were allowed entry into the 2011 season.
He said: "It's always disappointing when a team fails to make it onto the grid.
"However we have planned for such an eventuality and are prepared to supply USF1 or any team that replaces them on the grid in 2011."
Cosworth announced their return to Formula 1 last year, supplying engines for USF1 as well as the new Lotus, Hispania Racing and Virgin teams, as well as the long-established Williams team.
When the deal was announced, the firm's chief executive, Tim Routis, said Cosworth would charge each team 5 million a year to get two cars on the Formula 1 grid.
In a statement issued this week, the FIA said: "The USF1 Team have indicated they will not be in a position to participate in the 2010 Fia Formula One World Championship.
"Having considered the various options, the FIA confirms it is not possible for a replacement team to be entered for the championship at this late stage.
"In the coming days the FIA will announce details of a new selection process to identify candidates to fill any vacancies existing at the start of the 2011 season."
Following Cosworth's return to Formula 1 last year, the firm employed about 100 new members of staff at the Northampton factory.
It unveiled the 10 new engines in January this year.
