Commuters facing rise in fares on the railways
Commuters in Northampton could face an six per cent rise in train ticket prices next year.
It follows the announcement of July's inflation figure yesterday, which is used in the formula that allows train companies to increase regulated fares, including season tickets.
Train firms can add a further one per cent to the figure of 4.8 per cent, meaning a possible increase in prices of nearly six per cent.
Passenger groups are already calling on train companies who operate in Northampton - Virgin, London Midland and East Midlands - to show restraint when they consider increasing their fares.
Sally Keeble, the chairman of Northampton Rail Users' Group, said: "It was always expected that the inflation rate would be high.
"I hope that the train operating companies will try very hard to contain the costs, difficult though that may be.
"There has been quite a substantial increase in recent years in ticket prices and car parking charges.
"Train companies have to find ways to cut costs because people are not seeing these increases in their pay packets.
"A rise of nearly six per cent will have a big impact on a family budget. Those who have to commute to work really have no choice but to pay."
A London Midland spokesman said no decision had yet been made.
