Community stunned by death of Daniel, 20

The family of Daniel Worrall said the whole of his village community has been stunned by the death of a popular young man.

Daniel, aged 20 from Woodford Halse, died on Saturday night when his car crashed into a tree near his home in Byfield Road. He was the first person to die on the county roads in 2009.

Yesterday his grieving family, including dad Kevin, mum Jane and older sister Melissa, issued a statement through a family friend that spoke of the shock of local people at news of his death.

It said: "The community of Woodford Halse has been stunned by the tragic death of Daniel Worrall, in a car accident on Saturday evening.

"As all who were fortunate to have known him will know, Daniel loved and lived life to the full.

"He was popular among young and old alike, something which has been made apparent by the sea of cards and flowers as well as the hundreds of messages left on his Facebook, Bebo and MySpace pages. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by all.

"His mother and father, Kevin and Jane, and sister Melissa wish to thank the hundreds of people who have offered their kind words and thoughts.

"The funeral is being arranged but at this sad time we would ask that the family be given the privacy, space and time needed to fully come to terms with Daniel's passing."

Daniel, who lived in Woodford Halse all his life, was a keen sportsman.

While at Danetre School he represented Northamptonshire at cross-country and, in 2002 became the county's youngest qualified football referee, officiating regional league matches until his death.

He also played football for Woodford United's reserve team and captained Woodford Halse Cricket Club's second eleven, where he helped coach the younger players.

Since last year he had worked for DM+ Security in Daventry as an electrical engineer and was studying for further qualifications in electrical and mechanical engineering at Northampton College. He planned to complete his apprenticeship and eventually start a new life in Australia.

The accident took place at about 7.45pm and police have asked witnesses to call them on 08453 700700.

Daniel's funeral service will be held at Banbury Crematorium, details of which will be publicised.

Afterwards, a celebration of Daniel's life will take place at Woodford United Football Club, to which all those who knew him have been invited.
