Clyde Loakes: 'I'm up for the fight'.

LABOUR'S candidate for the Northampton South seat at the General Election has said he is 'fully committed' to the fight.

In an interview with his local newspaper, the Waltham Forest Guardian, this week, Clyde Loakes reportedly said he was only standing in Northampton "for the experience".

The statement was described as 'staggering' by his opponents. But last night he issued a statement declaring his intention to fight for the seat.

He said: "I'm fully committed to Labour's general election campaign. We may be seen as the underdogs in this coming election, but we haven't given up. I, along with other Labour members, am taking the fight to the Tories and although we'll not win every seat we'll continue to campaign and fight for a fair future for all."

The current holder of the seat, Conservative Brian Binley, has refused to comment on the issue. But others battling for the seat said they were shocked by the Labour candidate's reported comments.

Tony Clarke, who is standing as an independent, said in his blog: "Labour members have told me Clyde won't be around until after the election is called and then only paying fleeting visits, as he needs to fight to maintain his council seat in Waltham Forest which is also being elected on May 6. And as for gaining experience, the first lesson he's learnt is not to blow your cover before the campaign has begun."

Liberal Democrat candidate, Paul Varnsverry added: "The effect of former party members, plus a parliamentary candidate who doesn't live and has not lived in the constituency for decades, are what, in combination with Labour's national woes, have truly destroyed their prospects."
