Churches cash bonanza

CELEBRATION bells will be ringing across Northamptonshire thanks to a £20,000 grant by the Historic Churches Trust.

Twenty churches across the county have been awarded a slice of the money to assist with repairs and renovations.

The trust makes an award of grants each year, raising its funds primarily from an annual sponsored bicycle ride that takes place in September.

This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the Historic Churches Trust, the national body that co-ordinates the work of the individual county trusts.

The grants will help with repairs to organs, bells, central heating, stonework, leaking roofs and even church paths.

Among the churches to receive grants in the Northampton area are St Francis of Assisi in Duston, St John the Baptist in Boughton, St Giles in Northampton and St Peter & St Paul in Maidford.

Mary Telling, treasurer for St Francis of Assisi, said: "We have always supported the bike ride, so we wrote off to the trust to be considered for the grant.

"The 500 that we have been awarded is a big help towards replacing our rotten window frames."

St Peter & St Paul will use the money for a new heating system to keep the congregation warm during the winter, and St Giles will once again hear the sound of chimes when work goes ahead on the repair and renovation of its clock.

David Cockshott, former church warden for the 13th century church in Maidford, said: "The existing system makes the damp in the walls even worse. We are hoping that the new system will dry them all out."
