Charles brushes up on French at Upton Meadows

Prince Charles brushed up on his French during a visit to a Northampton primary school.

The heir to the throne visited Upton Meadows Primary School before taking a tour round the Upton development, which he helped design.

At the primary school, the prince saw a class of 23 Year Five and Six children who were using ICT as part of their lesson.

He asked a Year Five boy, "Can you speak a bit of French," then telling him it was "tres bon."

But when asked to speak some French himself, he said: "Ce n'est pas possible".

Prince Charles also spoke to a group of Year Five girls who were using an interactive white board.

He asked them: "Are you getting very good at this? Do you have ones at home or do you have to do it all on paper?"

After he left their classroom, the girls said they were excited to meet the prince.

One said: "He asked us what we were doing. I think it's very exciting because you never get to see a prince."

Headteacher Helen Hollwey said: "He spoke to several of the children, I think they were thoroughly excited about it.

"He was very good with them."

At the school, the prince met a number of permanent secretaries from government departments before taking a tour of Upton.

He visited the home of Samantha Spencer, a full-time mum who lives in one of the housing association properties on the development.

She said: "He asked about the community and the area. He was interested in how we found living here. He was very friendly."

The prince also took tea at the home of Andy and Deborah Grieve, who live in one of Upton's eco-houses, a special feature of the development.

Andy, aged 35, said: "We talked about what it was like to live in one of these houses. We had a chat about bills - I think they are about half what we had in the last house."

Deborah, aged 36, said: "I was very nervous. He was a good guest."
