Charity knitters highlight plight of birth victims

People who know how to knit have been asked to join in a charity event to encourage better care for new mothers across the developing world.

Sally Keeble, Labour MP for Northampton North, will join the Northants Ravelry Group at Abington Park Cafe on Sunday to help knit a patchwork cover which will eventually be presented to 10 Downing Street.

The event is part of a wider Oxfam campaign to raise awareness of the 600,000 women who die in childbirth every year.

Mrs Keeble said: "Knitting for new mothers is normally to provide clothes for their newborns.

"This is to highlight the fact that for hundreds of thousands of women childbirth is a time of huge risk.

"Oxfam's campaign highlights how local people in Northampton can make a difference to the lives of mothers and children thousands of miles away."

The event will take place at 2pm. Other knitting events will take place on Thursday, May 15, and Friday, May 16, at the Open Door Centre, 147 Kettering Road Northampton.
