Carlsberg reveals expansion plans

Brewing giant Carlsberg has revealed how it plans to expand its Northampton brewery, following the decision to close its Leeds site.

The Danish firm announced in November last year that it planned to close its Leeds brewery and confirmed the decision earlier this month.

After confirming the move, Carlsberg announced it would boost beer production in Northampton from 450 million litres a year to 600 million.

And now this week, the company has submitted plans for the expansion of the Northampton site to the West Northamptonshire Development Corporation (WNDC).

The proposals, which have been submitted to the WNDC by Carlsberg's planning consultants, Norder, reveal plans to build a new beer tank building and water treatment building and install 14 new beer tanks and a new carbon dioxide tank.

Explaining the plans, Norder said: "Carlsberg are to close their one other UK brewery in Leeds and concentrate production at Northampton.

"To achieve this, the production capability at the Northampton site is to be increased and a programme of modernisation is to be undertaken."

The firm added: "Given that the existing site is designated for brewery usage, and the surrounding area compromises industrial and commercial usage, it is considered that the proposal will integrate into the local context without detrimental effect to the surroundings."

The proposed new beer tank building on the eastern side of the site would cover just under 4,000-square-feet while the water treatment building would be just 775-square-feet while the new beer would reach up to 57ft.

To help the environment, the company has said it will transport many of the tanks to Northampton from Leeds instead of making new ones.

Norder said: "The re-use of the tanks from the Leeds brewery will reduce the amount of new tanks to be manufactured and reduce the amount of wastage generated from the Leeds site when it finally closes."

The number of people employed at Northampton would also remain at 346 and Carlsberg has said it did not expect traffic into the site to increase because of the development. The WNDC is expected to make a decision in the New Year.
