Call for review of 800-house plan
A campaign group against the expansion of Northampton is calling for a judicial review of the decision to approve plans to build almost 800 houses on the outskirts of the town.
The Northants Residents Alliance has described the decision by members of the South Northamptonshire Council development control committee to give the go-ahead to a proposal for 781 new homes and a country park at Upton Lodge, close to Harpole, as "unreasonable and inept".
In a letter to planning officer Michael Warren, Roger Kingston, co-chairman of the group, said they would also be making "strong representations" to Secretary of State Eric Pickles MP.
The letter read: "Representatives of Northants Residents Alliance are surprised that this committee was the final arbiter of this decision, since earlier decisions in close proximity to this area have been deferred to West Northamptonshire Development Corporation.
"As such, we feel that our members were denied the opportunity to make full and proper representation of their feelings regarding how the current lack of essential infrastructure in their immediate area is blighting their living standards and make the committee members fully aware of the impact that further non-strategic planning decisions would make upon their currently sub-standard environment.
"As such, Northants Residents Alliance is seeking legal advice, with a view to applying for a Judicial Review of the planning committee's decision on the basis that given the full facts of the combined expansion of housing in the immediate area, which totals approximately 4,300 dwellings, the committee's decision was unreasonable and inept."
The Northants Residents Alliance has more than 1,200 active members.
