Cable commends Cosworth's work
Liberal Democrat finance expert, Vince Cable, has commended staff at Cosworth following a tour of the Northampton firm's factory.
The MP visited the firm's St James base yesterday to watch workers making parts for Formula 1 engines.
He particularly commended the management of the firm who have taken it from its precarious position in 2006, when it lost all of its contracts to supply Formula 1 engines, to now, when it supplies engines for five teams on the Formula 1 grid.
He said: "It's great to see such a British industrial success story. Tere are far too few of them at the moment.
"The way they have used their technological expertise to diversify into other areas over the past few years has been excellent.
"It's clearly a very well run company."
Cosworth fell out of Formula 1 in 2006 following the loss of deals to supply both the Williams and Toro Rosso teams.
Following the move, the firm shed 200 jobs, but bounced back a year later after moving into other areas, including aerospace.
And this season, it will supply engines for Williams as well as the new Campos, Manor, USF1 and Lotus teams.
Parliamentary hopefuls and borough councillors, Paul Varnsverry and Andrew Simpson also took part in yesterday's factory tour.
Councillor Simpson (Lib Dem, Kingsley) said: "It's great to come here and see a Northampton success story.
"And that's why we wanted to bring Vince here, to show him some of the real successes there are in Northampton."
Councillor Varnsverry (Lib Dem, West Hunsbury) added: "Cosworth brings great recognition and prestige to Northampton.
"It's contribution to engineering in the town is something that really should not be overlooked."
