Busy roundabout's traffic lights knocked out by crash

Traffic lights are out at a busy Northampton roundabout for the second day running.

Engineers have been on site at the Tesco roundabout at Mereway since 8am but it is not known how long they will be out for.

There is slight congestion but traffic is moving.

A spokeswoman for MGWSP, which runs the county's highways network, said the lights had been knocked out when a car crashed into one of the traffic light poles at 2.45am yesterday, pulling out the cables.

She said the agency had applied to traffic management to close one lane of the roundabout in order to carry out repairs but the start of work was being delayed due to health and safety concerns because of the rain.

Work is expected to begin at 9.30am.

One motorist said: "For the past two days, the morning rush hour has been better than ever, there were no queues and it was easy to get round.

"They should leaves these lights turned off."
