Business boss back at Duston School
Cosmetics chain co-founder Rowena Bird returned to her Northampton school to help staff and students officially launch their specialist business, enterprise and science status yesterday.
The businesswoman, who set up cosmetics chain Lush, spent the day with pupils at The Duston School, who were trying to mirror Mrs Bird's success by hand- making their own soap products.
About 1,200 students from year seven to the sixth form were involved in the enterprise day, which was set up to mark the status and saw students making fragrances in the labs and designing packaging to market their goods in an Apprentice-style challenge.
Mrs Bird was invited to judge the event with Northampton South Conservative MP Brian Binley and Mark Pettican, head of sales at Barclaycard in Brackmills.
She said: "It's been a fabulous day and it's been good to come back. The pupils have really enjoyed working in teams, from choosing the fragrance and colour to looking at ways to promote their ideas.
"I've been chatting with the students and watching them melt down the bars of soap. The students have been very enthusiastic and thrown themselves into the challenge. Holding days like these make such a difference and it's a fun way of learning."
Head teacher Jane Herriman said Mrs Bird was invited to the Berrywood Road school because the business founder was an inspiration to pupils and wanted young people to learn from her.
Mrs Herriman said: "We applied for specialist status in these two areas because we believe we have two areas – business and enterprise, and science – that young people can do really well in."
