Bus and train attacked by stone-throwers

A bus in Northampton and a train on its way to the town were attacked by stone-throwers on the same day.

The attack on the bus took place in Goldings Road, Northampton, at 4.15pm on Wednesday when the windscreen of the single-decker was shattered. Nobody was injured.

A few hours later, the London Midland train from Birmingham New Street to Northampton was forced to stop for about 90 minutes after hitting a shopping trolley.

The train, passing between Birmingham and Coventry, came to a halt about a quarter of a mile after hitting the trolley placed on the line.

Police said the train and driver were stoned by several youths, causing further damage to two train windows.

However, no passengers were injured before they got off at Adderley Park station and were put on another service.

Two youths aged 13 and 14 were interviewed by police and will be helping with further inquiries, British Transport Police said.

A spokeswoman said stone throwing and putting objects on the tracks were serious offences.

"This type of behaviour can have serious consequences," she said.
