Construction of a new manufacturing facility at a global engineering company began in Northampton today and is expected to generate 70 jobs and £166 milion for the town.

Car engineering and manufacturing group Cosworth, started work on the £12 million Advanced Manufacturing Centre, supported by Northampton Borough Council, at their site in the Waterside Enterprise Zone, off St James Mill Road, in Northampton this morning.

The new facility, expected to be fully operational by the beginning of next year, will create 70 jobs as well as engineering apprenticeships for students and young people in the town.

It is also expected to generate £166 million for the local economy over the next 10 years, through overseas business visitors and spending from well paid employees.

Today’s event was attended by Local Government Minister Kris Hopkins and Cosworth Group Holdings chief executive, Hal Reisiger

Mr Hopkins said: “By choosing Northampton’s Enterprise Zone to develop the next generation of high performance engines, Cosworth will keep the UK at the forefront of automotive manufacturing and bring new jobs, skills and technology to the area.”

Northampton Borough Council leader, David Mackintosh, said: “This new development will help to put Northampton on the map.

“Everything has gone smoothly and the planning application, submitted nine months ago, was completed in record time.

“This just goes to show what can be achieved when the Council works with companies and the Government to protect and create jobs.”

Commenting on the positive feedback already received about the new development, Northampton South MP Brian Binley said there could be another facility planned within the next five years.

Mr Reisiger, added: “It is invigorating to work alongside a team who understand the needs and priorities of Cosworth and who share our drive and vision to supply excellent products and services to high performance vehicle makers.”
