Brave Betty takes to charity catwalk
A pensioner who battled breast cancer will take to the catwalk to show women they can "still feel feminine".
Betty Donaldson, 72, from Whittlebury, was given the all-clear earlier this year after a gruelling three years of treatment and recovery, including a mastectomy and breast reconstruction.
Proving it's never too late to start modelling, Betty will make her debut at the Breast Cancer Care Show in London next month in front of hundreds of guests.
She was asked to take part in the event after offering her support to the charity.
Betty, who was diagnosed in January 2007, said: "It's been a tough few years, but I'm a very positive sort of person, so when I was diagnosed I thought I've got this and now I'm going to beat it. If I felt terrible during the chemotherapy I told myself 'tomorrow will be a better day'.
"Taking part in this fashion show is my chance to say 'I'm still here, living life to the full and I still feel feminine'.
"It's very difficult for somebody to imagine what it is like to lose your breast, you see yourself in the mirror and it's not nice.
"For me the only option was reconstruction and staff at Northampton General Hospital were superb throughout. Now I feel great and I live for each day."
The Breast Cancer Care Show is an annual fundraising event for Breast Care UK, and this year 24 debut models, including one man, will take to the catwalk in the latest fashion.
Professional hair and make-up artists from Sassoon and Estee Lauder will also treat the models to a make-over.
Betty added: "I'm really chuffed to be modelling. I was lucky enough not to need any practical and emotional support from the charity because I have such a wonderful husband, family and friends. But there are many people who do need its services and I'm glad to be supporting such a very worthwhile cause."
