Blot on the landscape knocked down at last
An eyesore that has blighted the landscape in a Northampton road for years has finally been demolished, much to the delight of nearby householders.
The burned-out eight-bedroom house in Edgemont Road, Weston Favell, has been derelict for nearly five years after two fires within two weeks of each other completely gutted it in 2004.
Since then, neighbours in the affluent east Northampton road have complained that the boarded up building and its overgrown garden have been a magnet for vermin and anti-social behaviour.
So when new owner Paul Duffield bought the site earlier this year, he promptly applied to Northampton Borough Council for planning permission to demolish the house and then subsequently knocked it down in two days – delighting neighbours in the process.
Sylvia Marsh, who lives opposite the site with her husband Peter, both retired, said: "We are elated, everybody is pleased.
"Paul has done more here in two and a half months than what has happened on the site for the last four and a half years. He has become a knight in shining armour because he has achieved so much in such a short amount of time.
"Nobody was happy with it sitting there forever."
The couple said Mr Duffield, from Irchester, had suggested to them that he would like to build another luxury house on the site, possibly in the "footprint" of the former home because the foundations were still there, but is yet to put forward a proposal for planning permission.
Nearby householder Roger Webb, who is also retired, told the Chron: "I am very pleased, although it has taken a while. It wasn't very good for the environment and who would want to buy a house next door to a burnt out ruin?
"We are just pleased it's now been sorted."
