A bin lorry caught fire during recycling collections in a street in Northampton.

Firefighters from Northampton were called to Yardley Drive in Kingsthorpe at around 3.35pm yesterday (Monday) where a recycling lorry had burst into flames during a collection.

Police closed the road during the incident.

Ian Tompkins, who lives in Yardley Drive and witnessed the incident, said: “After about an hour, the fire was still smouldering. Speaking to one of the firefighters, he told me that they were recovering the lorry back to the depot in order to empty it and put the fire out properly as the metal casing holding the recycling together was preventing the fire being extinguished.”
