Big search for Northampton diver missing at wreck site

Coastguards in Scotland are in a race against time to find a diver from Northampton who is missing from a wreck site.

Shetland Coastguard is co-ordinating the search for the diver from a wreck site in Scapa Flow.

The coastguard says it was contacted by the dive boat Karen, which said that a diver had not surfaced after a dive on the 40-metre depth Markgraf wreck site in Scapa Flow.

Two divers had been diving when one of them got into difficulty and only one of the divers resurfaced.

Fears were growing for the man, because survival times in the North Sea are normally no more than three hours.

Shetland Coastguard scrambled the coastguard rescue helicopter and requested the launch of Stromness and Longhope RNLI lifeboats, while coastguard rescue teams from Stromness and Hoy joined the search.

The coastguard confirmed the missing male diver is from Northampton, but did not release any further details.
