Barrister back on Tories' election trail
Barrister Michael Ellis, who had said he would quit the General Election trail, has now confirmed he will stay the prospective Tory candidate for Northampton North.
The Weston Favell resident was chosen by the Conservatives to fight Labour's Sally Keeble on the next Westminster polling day.
His selection, in December 2006, followed a Pop Idol-style contest, dubbed "Tory Idol",which saw the public given the chance to vote for their favourite candidates.
But he offered his resignation in February, citing personal reasons, the need to travel and time pressures of his career.
His resignation has been considered for the past three month at Conservative central office, which yesterday announced he would remain as its prospective candidate.
He said: "I am pleased to confirm I will be the Conservative candidate for Northampton North, so that I can work on behalf of local people to deliver safer communities and economic stability.
"I did offer my resignation for personal reasons but the party has been very supportive and I was encouraged to keep the position. Having reflected on it, I'm very glad to remain as candidate."
The 40-year-old lawyer, who represented Boy George on charges of the false imprisonment of a male escort, was one of 100 participants in the Tory Idol contest.
Caroline Spelman, the Conservative Party chairman, said: "Michael Ellis, having been democratically selected to represent the constituency in a public vote, is the best candidate to represent the people of Northampton North at the next General Election"
