Balaclava gang attack bank with sledgehammers

Two men wearing balaclavas and wielding sledgehammers staged a daring daylight bank robbery in Northamptonshire.

The two men smashed the door of the Abbey, in Kettering's High Street, as a security van was parked outside late yesterday afternoon.

They then sped away from the scene in a getaway car, leaving a security guard groaning in pain on the floor.

Det Insp Andy Nichols, of Northamptonshire Police, said the raid happened at 6.45pm.

Police believe three men were involved in the robbery, including the getaway car driver.

The vehicle was later discovered dumped in a housing estate. It is believed the robbers used another car to escape.

One of the security guards, a 47-year-old man, remains in hospital with shoulder and chest injuries but his injuries are not life threatening. The other guard, a 33-year-old man, was also injured.

Det Insp Andy Nichols said: "Thankfully, incidents like this one are very rare in Kettering.

"A team of officers is now working on the case and we will do everything we can to track down the offenders. At the moment, we are not ruling out any links between this incident and other similar robberies across the country.

"One of the security guards remains in hospital but his injuries are not life threatening.

"The offenders used a significant amount of violence in this incident and we are appealing for anyone with any information to contact us as soon as possible."

Anyone with any information can contact Northamptonshire Police on 03000 111222 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
