Backing for our new Doctor
The young actor who will star in the new series of Doctor Who has won the support of both his town and The Doctor's former companion, Billie Piper.
Northampton-born actor Matt Smith will take over from David Tennant as the eleventh Doctor in 2010.
At Northampton's Guildhall this week, civic leaders from Northampton Borough Council lined up to pay tribute to the Great Billing actor who has landed the biggest role in British television.
The leader of the council's opposition, Councillor Tim Hadland (Con, Weston) said: "It's nice to have some good news and I think it's important that we congratulate Matt on this great achievement.
"He's a local man and we all wish him well. I'm sure we'll all have some jolly good Saturday afternoons watching him in the future."
Responding to criticism from some Doctor Who fans about the selection of the relatively unknown actor, Councillor Hadland added: "This is one of the highest profile acting jobs in the country. He was selected by people who know what they're doing and I'm sure over the coming years we'll become more and more proud of him."
The council's deputy opposition leader, Councillor David Palethorpe (Con, Billing) added: "I think it's a testament to his parents, his education and all the people around him who have supported his career up to now.
"I think everyone in the town gives him their best wishes for the future."
The 26-year-old has also won the backing of actress Billie Piper, who played the Doctor's assistant, Rose, alongside both Christopher Ecclestone and David Tennant.
The actress, who has appeared with Matt Smith in both Secret Diary of a Call Girl and The Ruby in the Smoke, said: "I love Matt Smith. He is young, but the fans get too concerned about these things
"They should just relax because it's going to be fine. They're in good hands.
"He has the perfect energy and zest for life that the Doctor character needs, so I'm sure he'll do a sterling job. And, he's a really sweet guy as well."
The former Northampton School for Boys pupil will start filming Doctor Who in the summer.
