Ancient jewellery unearthed in county
Jewellery worn by Northampton's Anglo Saxon residents has been unearthed in the county.
Two gold pendants which are both hundreds of years old are among a collection of ancient items which have been discovered by members of the public over the past 12 months.
Other finds recorded by Northamptonshire County Council this year include a Roman silver finger ring, a piece of medieval metalwork featuring animal heads and a collection of 324 medieval silver coins.
The council's new finds liaison officer, Julie Cassidy, said: "Although I've been in the post for just a short time, I've already seen a wide variety of finds brought in by members of the public, from Mesolithic flint tools to 17th century coins.
"Northamptonshire has such a fascinating history and cultural heritage and the finds being handed into me for recording are adding considerably to our knowledge of the area."
All the finds have been featured in the annual treasure report, which is published by the national Portable Antiquities Scheme every year.
The county council's cabinet member for communities, Councillor Andre Gonzalez de Savage (Con, East Hunsbury), said he was very impressed by the quality of finds being turned up in the county.
He said: "As a county council we value enormously our county's heritage and we are very proud of what it has to offer."
Under the voluntary scheme to record finds, more than 7,900 artefacts have been examined and recorded by the council since 1999.
Anyone who would like their finds looked at can contact the council by writing to Northamptonshire County Council's Archive and Heritage Service, PO Box 163, County Hall, Northampton, NN1 1AX, emailing jucassidy@ northamptonshire.gov.uk or calling Northampton 237249.
