Ambulance attacked while answering 999 call
Youths who damaged an ambulance service vehicle while its crew were answering a 999 call in Northampton have been branded "mindless" by managers.
The group of youths vandalised the fast response vehicle while its crew were in a house in Blackthorn on Sunday morning.
An East Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said the crew were coming back to the vehicle from a house where they had been answering an emergency call when they saw the group around it.
The youths ran off, but the staff found an implement had been used to try to open the two front door windows, damaging them in the process.
The vehicle is still roadworthy but costs will be incurred for bodywork repairs, the spokesman said.
Richard Clayton, East Midlands Ambulance Service Delivery Manager, said: "It is totally unacceptable for people to damage our emergency vehicles, particularly when our staff are helping someone who needs urgent medical help.
"It is beyond belief that someone would damage and possibly try to steal something from an emergency vehicle, let alone when the crew are trying to help a patient in need.
"The people that commit this kind of act against our service should be ashamed of their actions."
He said they wanted to send a clear message that this type of behaviour is not acceptable and said they would report incidents like this to the police.
Nick Arnold, the ambulance service's security management specialist, said: "We will not tolerate violent, threatening behaviour or damage to our property and anyone who behaves in this way will be reported to the police."
