'Abusive' council tenant is evicted
A council tenant who racially abused neighbours, set off fire alarms and vandalised property has been evicted from Paget House in Kings Heath, Northampton.
Christine Fitzjohn, aged 53, appeared at Northamptonshire County Court after the borough council applied for a possession order because she had refused to leave her flat, despite giving up her tenancy.
A spokesman for the authority said: "Northampton Borough Council was granted an immediate possession order against a former tenant at Northampton County Court. Fitzjohn had refused to leave Paget House after giving up her tenancy earlier this year.
"For almost six months she had continued to live in the flat after terminating her tenancy with the borough council.
"She informed the council that she wished to end her tenancy in May 2009. Fitzjohn then refused to leave the flat and continued to be disruptive and anti-social.
"The council received complaints that Miss Fitzjohn had been racially abusive, set off fire alarms, damaged the possessions of other tenants, removed fuses from fuse boxes and been abusive to staff at the local shop and primary school."
He said the council had "exhausted all other options" before taking Fitzjohn to court, where she was ordered to pay damages and fined 150 in costs.
Councillor Sally Beardsworth (Lib Dem, Kingsthorpe), portfolio holder for housing at the council, said: "It is always disappointing when we have no alternative but to take legal action to recover a property."
