40 mile queue on M1 as lorry overturns, spilling cola bottles across the motorway

Traffic was stacked back almost 40 miles back to the M25 this morning following a major accident in Northamptonshire.

The northbound section was closed for more than seven hours after an accident involving an articulated lorry carrying cola bottles and a car.

It happened at about 3am between junction 15 and junction 15a.

Police said there are no injuries to either driver.

However, the carriageway was strewn with debris, including glass and rolls of cardboard.

A sweeper machine was called in to clear the motorway.

Northamptonshire Police were able to have the M1 re-opened by 10.30am and put diversions in place along the A45, rejoining the motorway at junction 15a.

Traffic in the Mereway area was reported to be exceptionally busy at the height of the rush hour.
