1,800 people chase 25 new shop jobs
A recruitment day for a new shop was mobbed when more than 1,800 people turned up for just 25 jobs.
Staff could barely cope with the number of people desperate to land a job at the new QD discount store, set to open in Wellingborough this month.
They ran out of application forms, with more than 70 people chasing every job, and had to send people away to download them from their website.
Queues started forming before the 9am opening time at the Hind Hotel in the town yesterday.
Within four hours, 1,200 people had picked up an application form and QD Stores said anyone who returns today between 9am and 6pm or tomorrow between 9am and 4.30pm with a completed form will have a short interview.
Among the hopefuls was Levi Walters, 22, from Irthlingborough, who was made redundant when construction company Wrekin went into administration earlier this year. He said he has applied for hundreds of jobs and contacted every groundworks company in the phone book.
He said: "So many people are applying for the same jobs. I just need to find something."
Janine Barber, from Irthlingborough, was made redundant from a Kettering shop a month ago. She said: "You get an interview but there's 400 other people going for it, too. If you don't have the best qualification or the most work experience, you miss out."
QD Stores' human resources director, Nick Waterman, said: "There's obviously a lot of unemployment in Wellingborough. Based on past experiences, we were thinking we would get about 700 people so it took us by surprise."
Jobs on offer at the store include sales assistants, supervisors and cashiers.
The store will open in the former Woolworths.
