17 arrests in crackdown on car crime
Seventeen people have been arrested for motor vehicle offences during the first week of the re-launched Operation Tiger in Northampton and surrounding areas.
Operation Tiger is aimed at reducing vehicle crime across the county and is using new technology to help catch people involved in these types of offences.
The past six months has seen an increase in vehicle crime across the county and with the use of new technology officers hope to see these figures reduce.
Sergeant Dennis Murray who is spearheading Operation Tiger, said: "We are determined to tackle vehicle crime and overall vehicle crime went down by 11.4 per cent in the year ending March 2008.
"However, in the last six months there has been a slight increase in vehicle crime across the county and we are hoping the use of new technology will help to stop this increase.
"These arrests show we are tackling the issue across Northamptonshire and will continue to do so."
In Northamptonshire West six people have been arrested in connection with theft from a motor vehicle and one has been arrested for an arson involving a motor vehicle.
In Northamptonshire North three people have been arrested in connection of criminal damage of a motor vehicle, four for the theft of a motor vehicle, one for theft from a motor vehicle, one for arson involving a motor vehicle and one for aggravated taking without consent.
Officers are also reminding the public that they can do their bit to help prevent car crime.
Tips on how to prevent becoming a victim of vehicle crime include:
Never leave anything in your vehicle when you park, not even in the boot
Always lock your vehicle, even if it will only be unattended for a few minutes. Never leave the keys inside
Park in a secure, alarmed garage or on a driveway if you have one, otherwise park in a well-lit area
Keep your car keys safe, secure and out of sight when you are at home
Fit extra security devices to your car if they do not come as standard. If they are already supplied, make sure you use them
