£5m plan to revitalise Racecourse

A masterplan for the redevelopment of Northampton's Racecourse park is complete - and the search is on to find the £5m needed to make the scheme a reality.

The most expensive items in the masterplan are a cafe, which would cost 886,580, a pavilion, for 432,710, and play equipment, at 398,000.

The project, managed by the Friends of the Racecourse's subgroup, the Healthy Living Hub, has been put together by consultancy firm Lanarca, thanks to a 137,000 grant from the River Nene Regional Park. It is intended as a blueprint for development of the green space.

Michel Kerrou, the chief executive of the funding body, said he was impressed with the final document. He added: "It puts forward some very exciting opportunities. Having looked at Victoria Park, you can see how really simple things can lift the character of an urban space.

"This project will open people's eyes to what can be achieved. It does not have to come as a complete plan, but it's something to work to."

The masterplan has been handed to Northampton Borough Council for its consideration and it is expected to be discussed by its cabinet on June 2.

Northampton Borough Council leader Tony Woods (Lib Dem, St David's) said: "The Friends of the Racecourse and Healthy Living Hub team have done a fantastic job in producing a detailed masterplan for the Racecourse.

"Some of the proposals could be implemented quickly, while others are controversial. The council will need to develop an action plan to see which projects can be funded."
