£22 million bid to improve houses
Builders have been invited to bid for a £22million scheme to improve a quarter of Northampton's current council houses.
Northampton Borough Council has advertised two contracts, both worth 11million, to improve about 3,500 council houses in the area.
Work will include improvements to such things as kitchens and bathrooms, the renewal of electrical and heating systems and building repairs.
The council's cabinet member for housing, Councillor Sally Beardsworth (Lib Dem, Kingsthorpe) said she hoped the scheme would provide a real boost to the town.
She said: "This summer, work will begin on making improvements to almost 3,500 homes across Northampton.
"As part of the long needed work to bring our housing stock up to the decent homes standard, we're investing 22million in renewing and repairing homes in the town.
"As part of the European procurement rules, an advertisement has been placed in the European Journal and local contractors are being written to advise them of the opportunity to tender.
"We are looking to award two contracts to companies who will be responsible for refurbishing kitchens and bathrooms with brand new fixtures and fittings.
"We are also preparing a number of smaller contracts we would encourage local contractors to bid for.
"Our priority is to give people the homes they want and deserve, and we are committed to doing all we can to achieve this.
"Northampton is changing and I have no doubt there will be a lot of interested companies who will want to help us to make a world of difference to our tenants."
Advertisements for the two contracts were put on the internet yesterday and companies have until March 19 to submit their bids.
The council estimates work to improve the houses will start in July this year and should be completed by June 2013.
The work will mean the houses meet the Government's decent homes standard, meaning they are warm, weather-proof and have modern kitchens and bathrooms.
