£197k-a-year council chief executive Katherine Kerswell announces she is quitting County Hall
The chief executive of Northamptonshire County Council has announced she is leaving the authority.
Katherine Kerswell announced that she will be leaving to take up a post as the new group managing director at Kent County Council.
Mrs Kerswell, who has worked at the council since September 2007, is to leave the authority at the end of June.
A statement released this afternoon by Mrs Kerswell said: "Working at Northamptonshire County Council has been such an exciting and rewarding experience and I am proud to have led a council that is so dedicated to making Northamptonshire a great place to live and work for all of its citizens.
"There is so much that we have been through, facing up to the difficult issues we have had and together we have come through stronger than before. I am proud of the staff here who have gone that extra mile in delivering the change that was so needed.
"We've achieved so much together and I am confident that I will leave the council well-equipped to meet the challenges Northamptonshire is facing, with a team of staff that is absolutely committed to achieving excellence and a total dedication to our customers.
"Every job choice is a mixture of both career aspirations and personal circumstances and moving to Kent will enable me to have the best of both. I am looking forward to my new role in Kent and I wish Northamptonshire every success for the future."
Leader of the council, Councillor Jim Harker, said: "Kent's gain is very much Northamptonshire's loss. Katherine has made a very significant contribution to improving the quality of life for the people of Northamptonshire.
"Whilst I am very sorry to see her go I understand Katherine's decision to take up the challenge of one of the most high profile jobs in local government.
"I take it as a compliment that the work the county council has achieved has been recognised as valuable by Kent which of course is the largest of all shire counties."
It is expected that Katherine will take up her appointment at the beginning of July 2010. She will retain her current salary of 197,000.
Mr Harker said he is now considering options for future management arrangements at the council.
