£1,000 'ticket' for badly parked car

The leader of Northampton Borough Council, Tony Woods, has been presented with a mock parking ticket for £1,000 over an untaxed car which has been left in Northampton's Guildhall car park for two months.

The red Astra has allegedly been left in the official car park used by Northampton borough councillors, with the tax disc expiring in early September.

Councillors Christopher Malpas (Con, Billing) and David Palethorpe (Con, Billing), deputy leader of the Conservative group in Northampton, presented leader of the council Tony Woods (Lib Dem, St Davids), with a mock ticket protesting at the amount they claim is owed to the people of Northampton.

Councillor Palethorpe said: "If we are really talking about collecting as much revenue as we possibly can, then we've worked out that parking a car on council property without tax, it's either abandoned or should be forced to pay.

"We have to ask the question, why is it still here? The tax has run out so shouldn't it be reported? Everybody has heard about it," he added.

At a full Northampton Borough Council meeting in the council chambers, councillor Malpas presented councillor Woods with the ticket totalling 1,190.40 as the estimated cost to the taxpayer of the car being left in the basement car park.

Speaking at the meeting, councillor Palethorpe said: "We need to get in all the funding that we can and we calculated that the cost of the car downstairs would be about 1,100. Can I ask the councillor if he can actually find out who it belongs to and see if he can recover that funding?"

Councillor Woods, who had presented a report as the portfolio holder for partnership and improvement, said: "That is not a question on the report. I will not answer."

Later last night, the Conservative councillors were to ask for a review of car parking charges to encourage shoppers and raise cash for the authority.
