1,000 mph rocket car replica to go on show at Northampton college

THE TEAM behind a bid to break the land speed record with a 1,000 mph car will tour Northamptonshire over the summer, inspiring students and children to learn about engineering.

A full-size replica of the complete with the Northampton-built Cosworth engine which helps power it, will go on show at Northampton College next month before the people behind the project go on a month-long tour of the county.

The college’s principal, Len Closs, said: “The Bloodhound project helps us fulfil the college’s ambition to convey the excitement of science, technology, engineering and mathematics subjects and the stunning careers they can lead to.

“Our new state-of-the-art engineering studios at Booth Lane offer the perfect space to showcase the extraordinary Bloodhound exhibition. We’re also delighted to welcome Cosworth, whose incredible engine will be on display during the event.

“The entire event will undoubtedly prove highly inspirational and we look forward to welcoming people from across the county to see what it’s all about.”

The life-size replica of Bloodhound will be at the college’s Booth Lane campus from February 21 to 23.

During the visit, students, children and members of the public will be able to find out how the car works and take part in a virtual high speed driving experience.

The leader of Northamptonshire County Council, Councillor Jim Harker (Con, Kettering Rural) said: “The Bloodhound project is a fantastic opportunity for schools and the county’s learners to broaden hands-on science and technology learning.

“By showcasing how science and maths can be applied to such a real-life exciting scenario, we hope to enthuse students at an early enough stage to inspire them to become the next generation of young scientists, engineers, technicians and mathematicians.”

The Bloodhound is designed to travel at up to 1,050 mph. It will be driven at the Hakskeen Pan in South Africa in 2013 as part of a bid to break the world land speed record.

The director of the project, Richard Noble, who is a former holder of the land speed record, will visit the county to discuss the work behind the project in February.
