Lee gets fire in his belly

LABOUR has reportedly named its man (well it is a man) for the role of Police Commissioner for Northamptonshire.

Step forward Lee Barron, the former opposition leader at the Guildhall and someone whose politics are thought to be closer to the likes of Bona Fide Citizen Dickie than, say, Lee Mason. Lee Barron’s spent the past few years as the regional secretary for the postal union, the CWU.

It’s fair to say the CWU hasn’t exactly been a shrinking violet when it’s come to taking industrial action in recent years, so Lee should breathe some fire into the debate.

Nothing’s been formally decided as yet, but we hear there’s little support for the only other name in the frame, Mark Bullock.

Still on Labour people missing out: Commiserations to Ifti Choudary who’s missed out on the deputy mayor’s ticket for 2012-13.

Yes, Les Marriott’s got the gig paving the way for him to use that mayoral Jag in May 2013. Better luck next time Ifti...

FILM-GOERS will remember how alluring Michelle Pfeiffer was lying atop a piano in the 1989 classic The Fabulous Baker Boys.

Well Northampton was reportedly graced with a modern day equivalent last weekend in the unlikely surroundings of the Freemasons Hall in St George’s Avenue.

With the sunset fast approaching on that particular building as a home for the Masons, it was great to see them letting their hair down a bit on Saturday with the annual Ladies Festival.

Among the guests was Marianne Taylor, the Mayor of Northampton last year but who, tragically in Aufona’s opinion, lost her seat in last May’s borough elections. Our Masonic snout was pleased to relay how Marianne was on splendid form, dressed for the occasion in what was described as being a jumper dress, bright pink tights and knee-length boots. Anyway, before the night was out, Marianne was showing an interest in the grand piano, although she did stop short of lying across it as La Pfeiffer did all those years ago.

PS: Still on the Freemasons Hall: They’re being very tight-lipped about who has bought the building which they are due to vacate by May 31.

That date will be a sad day for tattoo fans across Northampton and beyond. The Northamptonshire Tattoo Event was scheduled there for June 2-3 which is a shame. Masonic tattoo art has a long tradition, allegedly.

OBVIOUSLY we’ll await Den Boy to tell us otherwise, but we hear a publication date is due within a couple of weeks on the first volume of his life story. We can scarcely wait and hope a copy will come winging its way to us along with a half dozen of pet chicken Aufona’s lovely eggs.

Rumour also has it that he, between bidding to become the Lib Dem MP for Northampton North (hope springs eternal), chicken husbandry and the occasional stint delivering curry for Saffron, is working on a romantic novel, working title, The Silk Scarf . . .

STILL no news on Rupert Matthews’ bid to fill Roger Helmer’s shoes in Brussels. With the press circling above what is fast becoming a farce, Rupe has been filling time posting blogs about ghost walks. In Kent.
