Saturday July 5 saw the ECKA Semi Contact Nationals take place at The Alan Higgs Centre in Coventry. This is an annual event, open to ALL ECKA (English Contact Karate Association) Clubs in the UK and a tournament which the small ECKA club in Kingsthorpe, look forward to every year.

The entire club attend this event – children from age five up to adults. With each place at the competition earning points towards an overall winning club on the day (and with Kingsthorpe having won it the previous two years) the pressure was on but everyone fought their hearts out. There were some great battles on the mats with some explosive moments and also some tense moments but everyone fought their hearts out to achieve some fantastic results, with many club members coming up against each other in the semi-finals or finals.

The pee wee team was particularly tense with it being one fight each between the first two fighters and level pegging right until the end in the third bout. Unfortunately, they had to take 2nd on this occasion but for children so young made an amazing effort.

When announcing the winning club of the nationals, Sensei Dev Barrett, from ECKA Head Office in Coventry, said: “ECKA Kingsthorpe won with a convincing lead this year.”

Chief Instructor, Michael Adams, said: “It’s great to see all the children’s hard work and commitment to their training pay off here and at other competitions throughout the year. Some of them train three to four times a week at the club and it’s good to see that everything they put into the sport can show dividends. Thanks must also go to their parents who are also 100 percent committed.”
