The gates of a cemetery are to be locked earlier in the evening after complaints about people camping there overnight.

A resident living near the cemetery in London Road, Kettering, contacted the Northants Telegraph to say they have seen people arriving at about 9pm and setting up camp for the night on several occasions.

They said it has caused concern for people living nearby, as well as being disrespectful to those who are buried there and their families.

Kettering Council has since confirmed that it has received a number of complaints about the problem and it is working with the police to tackle it.

A spokesman for Kettering Council said: “We have received a number of complaints relating to individuals camping in London Road Cemetery at the end of last week.

“After a number of visits by the council’s staff, people were found on site on Saturday evening in a tent.

“The police attended and the individuals concerned were moved on.

“We will be locking the gates earlier in the evening from now on to try and prevent any further attempts to camp overnight.

“We are also aware that the same people may be camping elsewhere in town so any further information from the public would be welcome.

“We would urge local residents not to provide food and water to people camping on public land.”

A spokesman for Northants Police said: “Officers did attend London Road Cemetery and gave two people words of advice.

“We have been carrying out patrols in the area and will continue to monitor the situation.

“We are working with Kettering Borough Council to deal with any ongoing issues and would urge anyone with concerns to call 101.”
