Job losses at Carlsberg expected to have limited impact on Northampton staff

Outsourcing of 1,000 logistics jobs by Carlsberg will not have a huge effect on Northampton staff, it is understood.

Carlsberg UK confirmed yesterday that it was consulting on plans that would see DHL take on the role of transporting beer from depots to customers.

But it is understood that brewery jobs - like those at Bridge Street, Northampton - will not be affected and there will be minimal effect on staff at Kings Heath, who are involved in transporting beer from brewery to depot.

Julian Momen, chief executive, said the changes are to enable the firm to concentrate on making beer rather than delivering it. Currently, Carlsberg delivers not only its own beer but that of other brewers.

He said: “Our intention to outsource our secondary logistics to a specialist logistics provider in DHL Tradeteam is taken with a long-term view of the market to ensure a sustainable solution in terms of service and cost for our business and our customers.”

A consultation will take place over the next two months with any job losses to be complete by March 2018.

Mr Momen said: “Our focus over the coming months will be on providing all potentially affected employees with the support they require.”
