How many Oxbridge candidates does your school have? Figures for every school in Northamptonshire

It's every academic's dream to wander among the spires of Oxford or the romantic colleges of Cambridge.

Both establishments have, in recent years, pledged to ensure more students from state schools and working class backgrounds are given places.

But figures revealed here today show that students from independent schools in Northamptonshire still have a much better chance of getting into the elite establishments.

The statistics show that the most successful school in our county at getting pupils through the doors of Oxford or Cambridge was Oundle School - which had 10 Cambridge entrants and 16 Oxford entrants in 2015. Parents of boarders at the school in East Northamptonshire pay between £25,000 and £33,000 per year in fees

In terms of Oxbridge entrants, the most successful state school in our area was Brooke Weston in Corby, which sent six students to the universities last year.

The independent regulator, the Office for Fair Access to Higher Education, believes that everyone with the potential and ambition to succeed in higher education should have equal opportunity to do so, whatever their income or background.

Professor Les Ebdon, director of OFFA, said: “There are more people from disadvantaged backgrounds in higher education than ever before, with 7 per cent more young people from disadvantaged backgrounds securing a university place this year following last week’s A-Level results.

“Despite this progress, you are still much more likely to go to university if you come from an advantaged background, meaning that many people with the talent to excel in higher education are missing out. One of my top priorities is to narrow this participation gap at those universities with the highest entrance requirements. Much good work is being done – with these universities working hard to reach out to talented young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, helping to raise their aspirations and attainment. Progress is being made, but there is still much work to do before we can ensure that everyone from Northampton who has the potential to succeed in university has the opportunity to do so, whatever their background.”

Every university has to publish access agreements which give a transparent overview of how students are admitted.

The statement from Cambridge says: “The university has made significant progress against admissions measures. The proportion of young state sector students securing a place at the University of Cambridge has increased at the rate of approximately 0.5 per cent per year over the last decade.

“As 2012-13 HESA performance indicators show, it is now at its highest level in 30 years and reflects patterns of attainment by school type.

“The university aims to attract the best and brightest students in the UK, regardless of background.”

A similar statement from Oxford says: “The university has set a range of challenging targets (with annual milestones) that indicate our progress in admitting students from socially, economically, and educationally disadvantaged backgrounds.

“Oxford will continue to focus its outreach efforts and resources on recruiting and encouraging a wider range of students to apply successfully to the university.”

The statistics below relate to applications for entry in September 2015. The University of Cambridge does not publish figures where there were below three admissions, it simply indicates that there were less than three but more than zero applicants.
