The interim director of nursing at an NHS trust in Northamptonshire has died suddenly.
Sharon Dennis, who joined Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS last month, passed away on Tuesday in Kettering.
Police have said the death is “unexplained” at the moment, as all tests have not yet been completed.
Angela Hillery, chief executive of Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, said: “It is with deep regret that we learned of the sad and sudden death of Sharon Dennis, Interim Director of Nursing.
“Sharon was a Registered Mental Health Nurse who specialised in acute inpatient care.”
While a nurse director she held a part time national role as clinical specialty adviser - nursing at the National Patient Safety Agency.
She was regional co-director and board secretary at the Royal College of Nursing, leading the large South East England section.
She was also an active member of the Royal College of Nursing as a member of the mental health forum’s steering committee.
More recently Sharon worked as a mental health management consultant.
The Windrush Nurses and Beyond Foundation had recently named its Mental Health Nursing Award after her.
Mrs Hillery said: “I am not able to share any further information with you at this time. Because her death was unexpected we must await the outcome of the formal processes the police follow to determine the cause of her death.
“Sharon had been working at the Trust since August 2013 and had already made an impact despite this short length of time.
“She will be much missed by colleagues and our thoughts are with her family and friends at this tragic time.”
