The question and answer session with Paul Gascoigne still raised thousands of pounds for charity despite the star having to abandon his talk after just 10 minutes.
Gascoigne, who has since checked into a rehab clinic in Arizona, in the United States, swore repeatedly during the public appearance at the Park Inn, Northampton, before admitting to being drunk and breaking down.
The event was jointly organised by Northampton Town Football Club and a local business publication and was raising money for the football club’s academy and the Northamptonshire-based Crazy Hats cancer charity.
Hundreds of guests attended the event, which also included a charity auction and comedian Jerry Earl.
A club spokesman said the general feeling from the audience was one of sadness and sympathy for the footballing legend, rather than anger that his talk was cut short.
He said: “Gazza was not well on the day, but he insisted that he still wanted to appear as planned.When it was clear he was unable to continue, his particular part of the evening, was cut short.”
It is expected more than £5,000 will be raised. All the profits from the ticket money will go to the charities.
