A fund to support players badly injured on Northampton football pitches is running dangerously low, a Sunday league manager has warned.

Kislingbury FC manager Graham Pinney, a rep on the Northamptonshire Football Association, said the Swain Benevolent Fund is running at about £2,000 after a failure of local teams to pay in.

It means some players will unknowingly be risking long-term injuries with little or no compensation from their leagues.

Mr Pinney said: “The proportion you get out if the worst happens is related to the portion your club pays in and some are putting in very little.

“I was gobsmacked to find out that one club put in £1 as its annual donation.

“If there’s a serious injury their players risk being off work with mortgage to pay and no support.”

The Swain Benevolent Fund was established by the Northamptonshire FA to primarily help players in football suffering financial hardship as a result of injury sustained whilst playing the game.

The Fund also aids administrators and referees who experience difficulties through injury and illness.

Each case is treated individually and awards made on the assessment of circumstances following a written request and personal visit to the applicant. The Fund relies solely on donations from clubs, leagues and individuals for its income.

The lack of funds looks even worse when it is revealed that £1,500 of the money was bequeathed by NTFA rep Roy Ainge, who died recently.

Mr Pinney was particularly motivated after recent incident where a Northampton footballer collapsed during a match and hospital scans later found he had a life-changing illness.

He was able to benefit from the Swain fund but others may be unable to if current rates of donations from the 600 clubs continue.

To combat the dwindling funds, Mr Pinney is trying to organise fund raising events and the Cobblers have also pledged their support.
