A floating restaurant in Northampton was targeted by vandals who threw a load of building materials into the river.

The Ark, in Midsummer Meadows, off Bedford Road, was targeted at some point between 7.50pm and 8.05pm on Monday, July 14.

A group of four teenagers tried to break into the main restaurant building, but when they could not get in, they walked down to the river bank where there was a collection of building materials.

They threw the materials into the river and most of them were washed away - but some became stuck in the middle of the water.

The teenagers were all male and two of them had bicycles.

Work began on The Ark at the end of last year and will be the first floating restaurant in Northampton.

Plans for the restaurant were first submitted to Northampton Borough Council in 2010. They caused controversy at the time because the police identified the Midsummer Meadow area as a known ‘gay cruising’ site and members of Northampton’s gay community threatened to take legal action to prevent the development.

Their legal threat came to nothing however and plans for the restaurant were backed by the council in 2010 and again in April this year.

An opening date for the restaurant has not yet been announced.

Witnesses, or anyone with any information about this incident, can call Northamptonshire Police on 101. Alternatively, information can be given anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
