Russell Warren’s unbeaten century guided Northamptonshire to an emphatic eight-wicket victory over Leicestershire in the Second XI Trophy yesterday.
Leicestershire were pegged back from 112-1 to 211 all out at Oakham School, and although seamer Tom Baker claimed 3-46 the pick of the County’s bowlers was left-arm spinner Monty Panesar who snapped up 2-27 from an accurate ten-over stint.
Northamptonshire coasted home at 212-2 with more than 16 overs to spare, boosted by Warren’s 124 not out and 71 from Matt Cassar.
Academy batsman Cameron Wake notched his third unbeaten century in only five days as Northamptonshire’s Under-17s took the first-day honours against Cambridgeshire at Horton House.
Wake’s 100 not out – plus enterprising contributions from opener Jack Newton (86) and Mark Nelson (80) – steered the County to a formidable 422-4 declared, and David Stone then struck twice as Cambridgeshire struggled to 28-3 in reply at the close.
Northamptonshire are seeking a new Commercial Director to replace Nigel Felton, who is leaving the club to pursue his other businessinterests.
The former opening batsman – who made 103 first-class appearances between 1989 and 1994 – returned to Wantage Road in 1999, and Chief Executive Steve Coverdale said: “He has done a fantastic job for us over the past three years.”
“But Nigel’s other business commitments have grown and developed in that time, and obviously we respect his decision to concentrate on them now. We wish him every success for the future, and now the task for us is to find his successor.”

India batsman Yuvraj Singh fractured his finger in Saturday’s triangular one-day series final against England, an Indian Cricket board official has revealed.
Yuvraj will not now be considered as a late addition to the Indian squad for the forthcoming Test series against England.
Yuvraj and Mohammad Kaif, who produced some stirring performances with the bat in the one-day tournament, were due to be considered for selection at a meeting today to decide on any addition to the 16-player squad for the four-game Test series starting on July 25.
“We now hope he (Yuvraj) would be available for the ICC Champions Cup tournament in Colombo (in September),” the official added.
Kaif and Yuvraj, who had been picked only for the one-day series with Sri Lanka and England and were scheduled to fly home yesterday, had been asked to stay in England and wait for the selectors’ decision.
Yuvraj, 20, whose aggressive strokeplay was a highlight of the tournament during which he piled up 254 runs in seven innings, will now return home to recover from his injury.
Kaif led India to victory over England at Lord’s, top-scoring with 87 not out.
