Tap water alert: Supermarkets in Daventry run dry after panic buying
Residents in Daventry said supermarkets were running out of bottled water because of panic buying.
Mary Ellis, 57, from the Headlands area of town, said: "I went to Tesco this morning and every trolley had bottled water in it.
"The shelves were empty and there was an announcement saying that people could only buy a certain amount of water.
"It was chaos. I'm not going to start buying bottled water. I don't drink that much water, although I do have a dog so I'll have to boil water for him to drink.
"We don't know how long it's going to go on for - we've not been told anything.
"I've never known anything like this to happen before."
Many residents were angry that they had not been informed directly about the problem by Anglian Water.
Sam Hudspeth, 21, who lives on Tennyson Road, Daventry, said: "We heard on the radio that we had to boil the water but we do not know why.
"We have not had anyone from the water board telephone or call round or anything.
"We don't usually listen to the radio so it's a good job we had it on this morning.
"We have a baby so we are used to having to boil water anyway but it's annoying having to boil it every time we want a drink."
Pensioner Barrie Thresher, 67, who lives on Shakespeare Avenue, said: "It does not affect me that much because I don't drink water but I have a handicapped brother who takes things with water.
"The first I had heard about it was on the news this morning. Nobody official has been round."
At Tesco supermarket in Daventry, shoppers were queuing up in the bottled water isle and loading up their trolley.
A sales assistant said customers had been limited to eight scannable packets of bottled water each.
She said the store had been receiving emergency deliveries of water since 9am or 10am when stock first ran out.
Another delivery was due at 2pm, she said.
At the entrance, a sign was put up warning customers of the bottled water shortage.
It said: "We are currently out of stock of bottled water. We are doing everything in our power to rectify this as soon as possible."
Shopper Lynne Williams bought three six-bottle packs of water which she hoped would see the family though to the end of the week.
The 45-year-old said: "We need to drink water and so does the dog.
"I'm not really annoyed - we have been fairly well warned and as long as we can get an alternative supply...
"Hopefully this lot will last us right through."
