Ramos sacked because of UEFA Cup obsession - Graham Roberts

Former Tottenham hard man Graham Roberts says Juande Ramos lost his job because he was too obsessed with the UEFA Cup.

The ex-Spurs star was horrified by the disastrous start to the campaign, with just two points from their opening eight games under Ramos.

The Londoners turned to Harry Redknapp, and he has sparked a revival since taking over at the end of October.

"I said all along that we needed a British manager," said Roberts.

"Ramos was a lovely man but the players couldn't understand him and that was a problem, they didn't know whether they were coming or going.

"When you are playing Ledley King in cup games but not in league games, you've got a problem. Ledley King is probably the stalwart of the team and, when he plays, we don't lose.

"Harry plays him from Saturday to Saturday and the club has gone forward.

"I think Ramos got it wrong - he wanted to win the UEFA Cup more than he wanted to stay in the Premier League and he suffered the consequences."

Roberts was speaking at the launch of his book 'Hard as Nails - the Graham Roberts Story' in Glasgow.
