Pupil writes song of hope for children
A BRAVE teenager from Northampton, who suffers from diabetes, is in line to win a prize for a song she wrote about children less fortunate than herself.
Seventeen-year-old Emma Oakman created a rock song entitled Help Us in only one week for a competition run by Children In Need.
While feeling depressed about her diabetes, she said the thought of children in Third World countries reminded her of how lucky she really was.
Now the Thomas Becket School student could be picked to appear in a BBC-produced video of the song, if members of the public vote for her online.
Emma, of Bush Hill in Headlands, said: "I've got diabetes but it isn't under very good control and I've ended up in hospital with it in the past.
"I was feeling really down about it but, when I started to write the song, I realised that what I've got to deal with is nothing compared to what children in Africa have to face," added Emma, who started singing and dancing at the age of nine.
"It's only the third song I've written and I'm really excited to have the opportunity to get it heard and maybe make a video."
Emma has to inject herself with insulin five times a day to control her diabetes, which she developed five years ago.
The song can be listened to and voted for by visiting www.bbc.co.uk/northamptonshire/entertainment/music and clicking on the Be The Band link.
